Community–private sector partnerships in renewable energy

Research output: Contribution to journalReview articlepeer-review

Abstract

This review brings to the fore the fast-growing and significant phenomenon of community and private sector renewable energy partnerships, which constitute a fundamental building block of the global renewable energy transformation. This paper theoretizes on this issue by identifying six archetypes of local community–private sector renewable energy partnerships, namely knowledge sharing, private finance, local consumption, land seeking, community employment, and lease architypes. These archetypes are discussed with relation to key variables influencing partnership formation and perpetuation as part of the wider discussion regarding renewable energy partnerships between local communities and the private sector and the role they play in energy transition to a low-carbon society.
