Chronicles as a source for the history of pre-exilic Israel: between "negativism" and "positivism"

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Abstract

This article presents a "negative plus" view of the possibility to use the book of Chronicles as a source for the history of Iron-Age Israel. Assuming that Chronicles was written in the Persian Period, and that its main source was the books of Samuel and Kings, more-or-less as we know them, the article examines the ways in which the author of Chronicles used his sources and made them relevant to his audience. What this means is that a minimalist evaluation of Samuel and Kings as historical must mean an even more minimalist evaluation of Chronicles.
