Abstract

We show that mode dependent loss (MDL) in space division multiplexed systems can be effectively characterized by means of two scalar parameters, one related to the effect of MDL on the transmitted signal and one related to the effect of MDL on the accumulated amplification noise. The two parameters can be measured by means of a simple procedure and are uniquely related to the system capacity reduction caused by MDL.
