Brokers of Legitimacy: Intellectuals And Politics In Early Republican China

Abstract

The article discusses the role and category identity of intellectuals in politics of the Republic of China between 1912 and 1927. It argues that political intellectuals positioned themselves as brokers of political legitimacy as part of the evolving political culture of political parties in the 20th century. The author reveals that the Chinese historiography rarely mention intellectuals before the 1910s, except for outstanding intellectuals like Kang Youwei, Liang Qichao, and Zhang Binglin.
