Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to provide current information on the benefits and risks of physical activity (PA) and/or exercise. For clarification purposes, key terms used throughout the Guidelines related to PA and fitness are defined in this
chapter. Additional information specific to a disease, disability, or health condition are explained within the context of the chapter in which they are discussed in the Guidelines. PA continues to take on an increasingly important role in the prevention and treatment of multiple chronic diseases, health conditions, and their associated risk factors. Therefore, Chapter 1 focuses on the public health perspective that forms the basis for the current PA recommendations (5, 26, 34, 70, 93).
Chapter 1 concludes with recommendations for reducing the incidence and
severity of exercise-related complications for primary and secondary prevention
programs.
