Abstract

This paper analyses the stories of anti-Semitism which were spontaneously told in the course of in-depth interviews by Jews, by people of mixed projeny and even by non-Jewish family members of Jews who immigrated to Israel from the former Soviet Union in 1990s. These stories reveal that the Jewish identity of our informants was mobilized not by the observance of the tradition, the knowledge of Hebrew or attachment to the Jewish culture, but was a form of silent opposition to the state and popular anti-Semitism.
