Abstract
Two lost group portraits of surgeons carrying out operations are here identified as the doors of the surgeons' instruments cabinet painted by Anthonie Palamedes for the hall of the surgeons' guild in Delft, c.1658. They were part of a programme of works of art for the hall devised by Palamedes, of which two other paintings by him of medical subjects survive.
