title = "Ant{\'o}nio Fernandes and His Book on the Virgin Mary: A Contribution to the Jesuit-Ethiopian Debate over Asceticism and Matrimony",
abstract = "Ant{\'o}nio Fernandes (1567–1642) was one of the Jesuit missionaries who accom-panied Afonso Mendes (1579–1659), the Catholic Patriarch of Ethiopia, into exile in 1632. The defeat of Catholicism in the African country was complete; for some time, however, the Jesuits hoped that they could return to the country to continue their evangelisation of the locals. Like Mendes, Fernandes spent the rest of his days in Goa, where he was the prefect of the S{\~a}o Paulo Jesuit College for seven years until his death in November 1642",
