Abstract

The term animal management refers to the ways in which animals were raised, exploited, and traded. These are related to past population identity, its economic motivation, and its culture, and are also influenced by the local environment and historical events. Thus, studying animal management is a major tool to reconstruct past people lifeways. We provide an overview of main methods and models, and present driving factors involved in animal management decisions. Further discussion includes key issues in research and the complexity of management definitions. We emphasize the significance of studying the relationships between humans, their herd animals, and their environment.
