Abstract

The roles of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) have been in existence globally and under discussion in many countries for more than 50 years. This chapter describes some of the background work in this area by the International Council of Nurses (ICN), the WHO, and others. It discusses some of the efforts that have to be undertaken to build a universal recognition and implementation of the role for the benefit of both nursing and the public. Having the ICN documents that outline the competencies, standards, roles, and expectations of APRNs is extremely important and helps nurses and the governments of countries know how to move forward if there is the political and the professional will to do so. The standards and core competencies are expected to provide a foundation and broad guidelines for APRNs and contributing authorities all over the world.
