Abrupt disappearance of entangelement in fibers with polarization mode dispersion

Abstract

We investigate the decoherence of polarization-entangled photon pairs distributed over optical fibers with polarization mode dispersion. We characterize system configurations yielding entanglement sudden death and disappearance of non-locality and show the possibility of non-local compensation. Our results establish the ultimate boundaries for fiber-based quantum communications.
