Abstract
While writing this tribute for the founder of this journal, Nathan Sivin, we are mindful of the many eulogies that have already been published. The broad contours of Nathan Sivin's life trajectory are known; his scholarly accomplishments, and his profound influence on colleagues and students alike are thus now widely acclaimed. (See References.) As the three students who worked most closely with Nathan (he insisted we call him by his first name, even as graduate students) during his last two years (May 2020-June 2022), we decided to focus this East Asian Science, Technology, and Medicine (eastm) tribute on aspects of Nathan's work building the field of Chinese scientific and medical studies, his approach to research, and how he saw himself, topics that have not been foregrounded in previous encomia. Specifically, we examine here Nathan's role as a Science and Civilisation in China contributor, as a non-conformist scholar, a self-proclaimed generalist, and a proud dilettante. To this tribute we append a bibliography that includes a complete list of Nathan's publications since 1996, when this journal published an annotated bibliography of his published writings up to 1995, for the two festschrift issues of East Asian Science, Technology, and Medicine (formerly Chinese Science) (1995-1996).
