Abstract

Israel is one of the unique countries which has regularized the practice of hypnosis under a designated country law already in 1984. According to the law, only licensed physicians, dentists, and/or psychologists can study and practice hypnosis. The practice of hypnosis is restricted to one’s own original area of expertise: physicians in medicine, dentists in dental and oral care, and psychologists in psychological treatment. The law regularizes hypnosis studies and licensing. The making of the law of hypnosis was a turning point in the status of hypnosis in Israel. Hypnosis was officially recognized as a potent treatment tool where its use should be regulated and supervised. This in turn led the Israeli universities to incorporate the subject in the curricula of the medical and dental studies. During their clinical years, most of the students are exposed to hypnotic interventions. Concomitantly, research in the field of hypnosis is carried out by the Israeli academia, which results in a significant body of knowledge.
