Abstract
We demonstrate the application of a cellphone-based polarizing microscope for the detection of minute concentrations of hemozoin-the malaria pigment-and ? -hematin-the synthesized equivalent of hemozoin. Hemozoin concentrations as low as 0.75 μg/ml were detectable in malaria-infected human blood samples, demonstrating that the cellphone probe can offer malaria detection at very low parasitemia of 0.25%.
