Abstract

The purpose of the article is to expand the knowledge concerning children at risk through the study of a school culture that is in line with the principles of "positive criminology". Perceptions, applications and properties of school culture, as well as the experience and the insights of the educational staff and the students at risk, were examined. For that purpose an elementary school consisting of 15 children at risk, and 15 educational staff members, were interviewed. In addition, observations were carried out, and documents were collected for analysis. The findings, analyzed by a qualitive phonological research method, produced two main themes regarding the educational and the administrative principles that are employed in the school. Specifically, it was found that the organizational input was adapted to the needs of children at risk, and that the organizational output enabled the development of adults who are capable of coping with future opportunities on an equal level with others. This study enables the integration of the "positive criminology" field of knowledge, along with its potential contribution to advancement of children at risk, with the study of educational and administrative principles that can be learned and implemented in other schools. Furthermore, it promotes the development of positively-oriented intervention programs is schools by empowering the environment, enhancing student strengths, and creating situations that contribute to optimal functioning and growth of children at risk.
