This article reviews the history of medieval peshat exegesis research in Israel in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. A systematic study of medieval exegesis began in Europe in the first half of the nineteenth century and continued to spread throughout the Enlightenment period. This topic of research was not immediately continued in Israeli universities, and until the mid-nineteen-seventies it mainly existed outside the academic world. This trend was abruptly reversed when, during the latter third of the twentieth century, a vibrant interest in the study of medieval peshat exegesis emerged among Israeli scholars. However, in the last twenty years, the academic standing of this field has diminished, and today it is concentrated mainly in academic institutions with a religious orientation. All these trends and directions of development have non-academic ideological and theological factors, and they are an indirect expression of cultural and social changes that have transpired in the State of Israel over the years.
