Abstract
Entering academic life is considered one of the main transitions of human development in modern society, which in turn presents many challenges for students with disabilities as they adapt to the new academic space. These challenges continue throughout their academic journey, manifesting themselves in various ways. This article examines how these challenges are experienced, by students with disabilities through the use of the photovoice methodology a critical approach that provides a platform for students to voice their experiences. The study was conducted in an elective course at an academic college, where students were tasked with documenting and collecting experiences of diversity within the academic space through photovoice methods. Among the 136photovoices collected from 102 lecturers and students, 56 photovoices focused on the experiences of 53 students with disabilities. The photovoice methodology enabled these students to document and express their experiences across three different contexts of transition: time, space, and self-states. Drawing on the theory of transition, the article concludes that the photos illustrated how students navigated four key elements of transition: situation, self, social support and strategies. This navigation was reflected in the students' abilities in self.advocacy, self-management and self-awareness.
