Abstract

Following changes in physician-patient relationships, researchers have begun to examine what qualities a “good doctor” should have. The qualities required to be a “good doctor” cannot be defined solely by medical professionals; they must also emerge from patients’ emotional and social state and their experiences in the patient-physician encounter.
Objectives: (a) To investigate the perceptions of the public and of physicians regarding the physician’s role in reducing health disparities and regarding the most important characteristics of a “good doctor”; (b) to compare the two populations’
perceptions.
