Abstract

This article examines the motivations and strategies employed by liberal Orthodox rabbis who have adopted a more lenient stance on homosexual relationships and certain forms of sexual contact between men within the boundaries of halakha. Drawing on previously unpublished rabbinic writings, the article offers a nuanced analysis of this evolving discourse.Beyond analyzing the rabbis' motivations and inter pretives trategies, the article explores the broader philosophical, sociological and gender implications of their lenient approach. From a halakhic perspective, the article examines how these rabbis have employed no velinterpretive methods to justify their conclusions. From a gender sociological perspective, the article argues that the contemporary understanding of homosexuality as an identity and typology is are latively recent development that has significantly influenced the views of some liberal Orthodox rabbis.
