Notes that the Holocaust in Greece was totally ignored in Israeli cultural venues and literature until the 1980s, and while there has since been some recognition, it still has not been properly documented. Most of Greece's 77,000 Jews lived in Salonika, and ca. 90% of them perished, mainly in Auschwitz. Notes that many Jews in Greece already embodied the Zionist ideal of the "new Jew"; in Salonika in particular, most of the workers at the port were Jewish. At Auschwitz, the Greeks showed resourcefulness and solidarity, but they suffered more from the cold weather and from illness. The small number of survivors who reached Israel after the war worked to commemorate their community, but knowledge of their experiences only came to the fore in the 1980s, when some of their children began to write about their parents' Holocaust experiences, and also to portray these experiences in film. Discusses works by the second generation, including Orna Ben Dor's 1988 film "Biglal ha-milhamah ha-hi" ("Because of That War"); the songs of Yehudah Poliker and Yaakov Gilad; the poems of Margalit Matitiahu and Avner Perez; the fictional writings of Lea Aini; and the work of Shmuel Rafael, who founded an organization for second-generation Greeks in 1985, as well as the journal "Lo nishkah" in order to tell the story of the Holocaust in Greece.
