Abstract
Medical institutions rely on ethics committees to address ethical dilemmas. This study examines the central issues brought before the ethics committee of a mental health center over a 25-year period, from 1991 to 2016. During the study period, the committee convened112 times. The committee's discussions were documented in protocols and analyzed using thematic analysis. The analysis revealed that the committee discussed 466 different issues over the years. The main issues discussed were: confidentiality (30%), patient autonomy (23%), medical records (14%), conflicts of interest (12%), financial matters(11%), unprofessional or inappropriate conduct by the caregiver (9%), and cross-cultural issues (1%). The analysis shows that both the content of the dilemmas and the solutions proposed by the committee changed over time. The study highlights the dynamism and professional development of the field of ethics in healthcare.
