חוקרים רבים הצביעו על שלוש תקופות הנזכרות במקורות כתובים, שמהם עולה כביכול חשיבותה של העיר, למרות שנמצאו מהן בעיר דוד ממצאים ארכיאולוגים דלים בלבד.המאמר מנסה לפתור את השאלה.
