Abstract

The contemporary world of work is undergoing accelerated change, partly in the context of rising life expectancy and population aging. Although the proportion of older employees is steadily increasing, ageism toward them remains prevalent in the workplace. Ageism affects the recruitment and promotion of employees, the allocation of resources, and social relationships within the organization, and harms business performance. This article reviews the phenomenon of ageism in general and in the workplace in particular, examines existing strategies for addressing it, and highlights their limitations. It then presents the unique potential of Virtual Reality (VR) technology to reduce stereotypes, and ageism in particular, through immersive experiences of perspective taking and embodiment in a virtual body. Studies indicate that such experiences influence attitudes and behavior. In applied terms, organizational psychologists may play a central role in adapting VR experiences to organizational needs and in evaluating their effectiveness, while ensuring ethical standards and privacy. The article suggests that integrating VR may provide a relevant response to an ongoing socio-occupational challenge, it may serve as a complementary and innovative tool for promoting an inclusive and fair labor market, and contribute to professional discourse on the adaptations required in a changing world of work.
