Abstract

This study examines the effect of the digital learning program devised by the Council for Higher Education )CHE) and the Planning and Budgeting Committee (PBC), as perceived by the academic faculty, in a case study of an institution of higher education in northern Israel. The purpose of the study is to investigate the faculty’s perspectives concerning the digital learning program in higher education and identify the challenges, barriers and opportunities formed by the program. What factors affect its adoption and implementation? To answer this question, in-depth interviews were conducted with faculty who had integrated digital learning in academic courses at an institution of higher education. The data collected were analyzed in a thematic analysis approach. Considering the extensive availability and accessibility of digital tools and resources, digital learning appears to have the potential to change how teaching is conveyed, how learning occurs, and how evaluation is carried out. Israel’s institutions of higher education seem to have adopted digital learning as a means of helping students during an unexpected crisis – and what now? What have we learned from this involuntary experience that can help plan the teaching, learning, evaluation, and design of the learning experience in the digital era? The findings of this study could illuminate the implementation of digital learning in institutions of higher education in theory and in practice, considering its strengths and weaknesses as perceived by the faculty. The research findings will help identify challenges and barriers that must be overcome when integrating digital learning in higher education, as well as shedding light on the opportunities provided by digital learning.
