Abstract

Does scientific knowledge help to promote rights for deaf and hard of hearing children? Parents of children who require hearing rehabilitation, must base their decisions on scientific findings. This article examines the frameworks in which parental advocacy is required, and whether scientific knowledge is important for advocacy. This study is based on interviews with thirty parents and ten child auditory rehabilitation experts. Parents and experts felt that scientific knowledge in the context of hearing loss is needed for auditory rehabilitation and effective advocacy. Experts tend to focus on technology-related aspects of auditory rehabilitation, while parents focus on concepts related to hearing abilities. Parents described scientific knowledge as necessary in the advocacy process in front of educational and medical staff. Experts said that scientific knowledge strengthens parental confidence. Together they shed light on the type of scientific knowledge needed by parents and its importance in therapeuticinteractions and advocacy.
