Abstract
This article discusses the way in which contemporary Islam adapts to various changes in Muslim societies in the Arab world and in the West. We shell focus upon the phenomenon of new types of marriage, their consequences, and social tensions. One type of marriage is called "zawaj friend" (a marriage [between] friends) which is common among young adults in the West. This type of "renewed" marriage has emerged because of difficulties on the part of young Muslim adults in dealing with the sexual permissiveness prevalent in Western societies, and the financial burdens of marriage at a relatively early age. The second part of the article is devoted to the legal and social problems of the growing social revolution in dating and marriage called "zawaj Facebook", which is characterized by the use of social media and networking.
