אתניות ללא אתניות — "אני מעבר לסיפור הזה": סדרי מדינה, חינוך וזהויות אתניות חדשות

באמצעות חקר מקרה של הפנימייה למחוננים טעוני טיפוח מבקש מאמר זה להבין כיצד פרטים שחוו התערבות מדינתית מכוונת במרכיב האתני של עצמיותם חווים התערבות זו שנים אחרי ההבניה. ממצאי המחקר העיקריים מלמדים שבוגרי הפנימייה המירו את הפעולות הארגוניות לזהות אתנית ייחודית: אתניות ללא אתניות. זהות זו מסרבת לכל עיסוק גלוי במרכיב האתני של מושג העצמי ונתמכת בתזכורות קבועות של הסובייקט לעצמו שהוא "מעבר לסיפור האתני". ממצאי המאמר מלמדים גם שזהות אתנית אינה חייבת להתבטא בפרקטיקות של יומיום, כי אם גם בעיסוק קוגניטיבי קבוע של הסוכן השומר על מרחק מהסיווגים האתניים הרשמיים הזמינים. פרק הדיון מתחקה אחר מקורותיה הארגוניים-חברתיים של זהות אתנית זו ואחר יחסיה עם חוויית האתניות השקופה השמורה לחברי המעמד הבינוני-גבוה. Using the case of a boarding school for the gifted disadvantaged, I attempted to reach an understanding of how individuals who have experienced deliberate state intervention in the ethnic component of their selfhood come to terms with this intervention years after the (re)construction. The findings illuminate how boarding school graduates transformed the intervention into a unique ethnic identity: "Ethnicity without Ethnicity". This identity rejects any overt engagement with the ethnic component of the self. The findings also show that ethnic identity is not necessarily expressed in everyday practices, but rather in the ongoing cognitive engagement of the agent who has been distanced from the available ethnic classifications. The discussion section goes on to describe the relationship of this ethnic identity to the "unmarked" ethnicity amongst the upper-middle classes.
