Abstract
An old Chinese belief states that “for the sky to be in its place, both men and women have to hold it up” . This perception may also be relevant in the case of promoting gender equality in organizations . In recent years, there has been an increase in the involvement ofmen promoting gender equality . Male activism receives a wide range of responses, from excitement about their involvement to suspicions regarding their motives to promote anissue associated with women . We review the existing research regarding the motivations of members of a powerful group ( allies ) to help members of a disadvantaged group andderive insights that might explain the range of reactions towards men who take part inthe struggle for gender equality . We distinguish between different types of motivations of men to take part in promoting feminist agendas, as well as how this effects the types of helping behaviors they provide . Finally, we propose several guiding principles that can be applied in the field in order to assist men, as members of the privileged group, to become true allies in attempting to promote gender equality within organizations
