Research interests

Tal Oron-Gilad is a full professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management at Ben-Gurion University and the George Shrut Chair of human performance. She received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in industrial engineering from the Technion in 1992 and 1997, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in human factors engineering in 2003 from Ben-Gurion University. Following this, she was a research associate at the Institute for Simulation and Training at the University of Central Florida before returning to Ben-Gurion University as faculty in 2006. Between 2015-2020 she was the chair of her department. She now serves as the Vice Dean at the Faculty of Engineering Sciences at BGU.

Prof. Oron-Gilad's expertise is in human factors engineering. Her specific interests are geared towards promoting user-centered design of Human-Machine Interactions, Improving Human's ability to interact with autonomous systems, Human-robot interaction and incorporating social cues in robotic behavior (e.g., social navigation), and integrating multi-modalities in Decision Support Systems for command and control (e.g., graphic communication on videos or stills, tactile communication for alerting, etc.)

Complex Human-Machine Systems consist of an arrangement of people and machines (or physical components) interacting within an environment to achieve a set of system/overarching goals. As systems become more complex, smart, and autonomous, the challenge of designing the interaction increases, and more emphasis is required for agents' mutual understanding and shared communication.

Prof. Oron-Gilad is the author of numerous articles and conference presentations and has supervised many graduate students. Her research was continuously funded by the US Army Research Lab, General Motors, the Israeli Ministry of Science, and the Israeli Ministry of Defense, and the Israeli Smart Transportation Center. She was part of several EU projects and initiatives (SOCRATES, MEDIATOR, and RESIST).
