Organisation profile
The Department of Physiology and Cell Biology is a part of the Basic Sciences division in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
The goal of the department is to drive forward new research areas that profit from multidisciplinary approaches, across the range spanning from molecular biology to integrative physiology. Research in the department is currently grouped into several system-related themes: 1) molecular aspects of cellular processes, 2) biological nanomechanics, 3) neuroscience – on the cellular, system and computational levels, and 4) mechanisms of embryonic development.
The number of research techniques used by the department members has expanded considerably in recent years, and it now includes cellular electrophysiology, computational methods for analysis of neuronal networks, calcium imaging, confocal and 2-photon microscopy, atomic force microscopy, optogenetics, and various molecular biology techniques. The Department offers outstanding research opportunities for both graduate research students and Postdoctoral research fellows.
Members of the Department teach extensive basic courses in physiology in all professional programs within the faculty of Health Sciences. They also offer courses which are administered by other faculties such as Engineering and Natural Sciences, or the department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, as well as a wide range of advanced courses for graduate students.
