The Department of Organic Chemistry is located in the Kimmelmann- Sieff building complex. The Sieff building and the founding of the Sieff Institute in 1932 preceded the establishment of the Weizmann Institute of Science. It originally was home to the first scientists of the Institute and housed the laboratory of Dr. Chaim Weizmann, which has been preserved to this day. Upon the inauguration of the Weizmann Institute and the building of the neighboring Bergman building (the later was renovated and renamed the Kimmelmann Building) the Kimmelmann-Sieff complex became the home of the Department of Organic Chemistry.
Today the department is comprised about 120 faculty, research staff and graduate students.
What we do – The research in the department spans the general fields of Molecular Science and Nanoscience. The research in the department is of a broad spectrum, much different than what you would find in a classic “Organic Chemistry Department. Our interests include research in organic, inorganic, organometallic, bioinorganic, bioorganic, catalytic, computational and nano-chemistry. Present research areas include sustainable chemistry, renewable energy, bioanalytical sensing, molecular based devices, functional materials, surface chemistry, self assembly, chemistry and the nanoscale, supramolecular chemistry, the chemistry of vision, computational chemistry, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy for imaging.
